For Phase 1 of Would Inglewood, entitled Innocent Monsters, Daniel and I created a space where an alternative reality could be generated and experienced. The Willie Agee Playhouse, the designated site of activation, became a destination for all who were willing to join us as we explored the city’s nooks and crannies as well as the folds and nuances within our psyches. Each visitor became a circumstantial and necessary collaborator who brought their personal history, physicality, voice, viewpoint and energy into the space, transforming it into a receptacle of their collective lives.

The playhouse stage was transformed into a heterotopic mis-en-scène featuring projected videos with audio of our travels around the city in my classic and decrepit Chevy truck named Lucilla; an enormous and absurdly intricate jigsaw puzzle that, although not solved, offered many solutions; a carpet mosaic set in place by intuition and serendipity; and an opportunity in the form of an online audio mixer to translate the sounds of Inglewood into a aural record that dissipated at the arrival of the next participant. These assembled elements resulted in a collection of layers, an experiential collage where shadow and interstice claimed as much space as body and object.
